The little things

February 27, 2016 Blog

CNC has been used to put planes in the sky and fashion the peak of machine capabilities but it can also be used to craft gorgeous little things that all are sure to appreciate. One example of that is this CNC crafted chess set that is completely gorgeous and precise. What are some of the little things you’ve made?

I recently saw this chess set by Kelly Fasnacht posted over on the LinkedIn CNC Programming group and thought it wa really neat.  What I like best about it is all the pieces can be made on a lathe.  The Knight is usually a sticking point that has to be done on a mill, but I like Kelly’s design for it here.  He made it back in the 1990’s using only one turning tool with a 15 degree insert.   The pieces are made from Aluminum and Bronze.
